On 22 March 2024, the reconstructed printing press of the prominent European book printer and publisher Christophe Plantin was opened on Level 5 atrium of the National Library of Latvia (NLL). Every interested person had the opportunity to try the printing press in operation.
The project of the Plantin press model (16th century) has been implemented in cooperation with Riga State Technical School. It was carefully made based on the drawings of the Plantin-Moretus Museum (Belgium), allowing people to imagine and experience what the book printing process was like in the past, when the composition of text made of individual metal letters was laid out in a mirror pattern on a printing form, followed by the application of ink and finally, by pulling a lever, the text was pressed onto the paper.
