The Latvian Post (Latvijas Pasts) has issued a postage stamp “500 Years of Books in Latvian”


To celebrate the significant anniversary of Latvian book publishing – the 500th anniversary of the first book published in Latvian – Latvijas Pasts (Latvian Post), in cooperation with the National Library of Latvia (NLL), has issued a postage stamp “500 Years of Books in Latvian”, dedicating a specially designed envelope in 500 copies to this event. The postage stamp, which has been issued in a circulation of 20,000 copies, has a nominal value of EUR 2.54 which corresponds to the letter correspondence fee for the category of up to 20 grams to countries of the European Economic Area.

 

On 3 April, the first-day cancellation of the postage stamp took place in the atrium of the NLL, and a selection of postage stamps “Postage stamp = value mark”. A collection of postage stamps of the Republic of Latvia from 1928 to 1945” from the collection of Latvijas Pasts was opened. Raimonds Jonītis, President of the Latvian Philatelists Union, gave a lecture “History of postal development in Latvia. Postage stamps”.

After the lecture, Edmunds Bebrišs, Head of the Philately Department of Latvijas Pasts, presented the stamp collection.


The stamp “500 Years of Books in Latvian” was designed by Madara Lesīte-Volmane and illustrated by Ella Mežule.
